Governor to call special session on redistricting this month

Governor Kay Ivey on Thursday in a letter to state lawmakers said she plans to call a special session of the Legislature later this month to address redistricting.

While Ivey hasn’t yet issued a formal proclamation to call the session, she wrote that she anticipates convening it on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021.

Under Alabama’s Constitution, the governor has the authority to convene special sessions of the Legislature to address specific issues they include in their call.

The second special session of 2021 comes just weeks after the Legislature’s first special session, which wrapped up on Oct. 1 and saw several prison construction bills and one relatively minor sentencing reform bill pass.

The two special sessions had been anticipated for months as the Legislature grapples with a crisis in Alabama’s prison system alongside the Legislature’s responsibility to reapportion and redistrict the state before statewide and midterm elections next year.
