FLORENCE, Ala. — In 1872, the State Regular College, now often known as the College of North Alabama (UNA), turned the primary four-year establishment within the state to open its doorways to ladies.
For the subsequent 14 months, UNA will observe the “Yr of the UNA Lady,” a celebration of the college’s feminine alumni and college students via occasions, historical past, and content material for net and print, together with a hardback e-book.
“As a campus neighborhood, this anniversary is a major reminder of UNA’s historical past of firsts, from our opening in 1830 as Alabama’s first public four-year establishment on LaGrange Mountain in Colbert County to our admittance of girls in 1872,” stated UNA President Dr. Ken Kitts. “Each as college students and amongst our college and employees, ladies like Ann Berry and others have and proceed to be important to the continuing success of UNA.”
Berry, a UNA alumna, is a 1978 graduate who now serves as the primary African-American Secretary of the Senate. She is simply the eighth lady to carry the title.
“It’s fantastic for UNA to rejoice 150 years of admitting ladies to the College,” Berry stated. “Our successes as ladies symbolize a strong array of accomplishments, and we should stay dedicated to opening doorways for others.”
